How to read the Bible

Reading the Bible from beginning to the end is often the way people read it. But is this the best, or only way to read it? Can our Bible reading be more productive for us if we recognise the different genre, age and authorship of it? Are there other methods we can utilise to help us?

Why do I trust the Bible?

The validity and reliability of the Bible have been contested through liberal criticism for many years. Now it is said that science has disproved the Bible and made it an irrelevant book. In the light of these sustained attempts to discredit the claims of the Bible being God’s word why can we trust it?

The Bible and the Holy Spirit?

Scripture teaches that Biblical knowledge alone is not enough for us to have. We need the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to open the Bible to our minds. Without the revelation of the Spirit our reading becomes dry and devoid of fresh light. We will consider the work of the Holy Spirit in relation to Scripture in this seminar.

What difference has the Bible made to us?

In this seminar we will consider how the Lord speaks to us through the Bible and how he uses it to help us develop and grow in our Christian experience. One of the great challenges of having the Bible as a guide and resource is that to be effective it must be continually applied to our lives.

The principles of interpreting the Bible

Hermeneutics is the name given to the study of the interpretation of the Biblical text and its communication. Our understanding of the Bible is based on historical knowledge of its context, background and the author’s intended meaning on any passage. In this seminar we will be considering these important matters that will help us to arrive at a clearer awareness of what Scripture teaches.

The Cross-cultural Bible

We are so privileged in the English-speaking world to have had the Bible in our own language for centuries. What difficulties are encountered when we meet people for whom this is not true and how do we translate or explain the Bible in a way that is loyal to the text but accessible and understandable to the reader?
